Influenza(インフルエンザについて)
What is influenza?
Influenza is an illness caused by the influenza virus.
In Japan, the number of people who catch influenza increases in winter.
Main symptoms of influenza
- Fever, chills
- Cough, runny nose, sore throat
- Headache
- Body aches, such as in the joints and muscles
- Fatigue
Complications
There are a variety of potential complications, such as ear infections and pneumonia.
People with pre-existing conditions such as heart, kidney or respiratory problems may develop severe symptoms.
Babies, the elderly, and pregnant women are particularly at risk of developing severe symptoms.
Steps you can take to avoid catching the flu
- Wash your hands with soap
- Avoid crowded places
- Get plenty of sleep and eat a well-balanced diet to build up your strength
- Open the windows to let in fresh air
- Get a flu shot
If you catch the flu
- Get plenty of rest.
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Seek medical advice if your symptoms are severe, such as if you have difficulty breathing, a high fever that lasts for a long time, or a headache.
You may be contagious for about a week. If you have a cough, cover your mouth and nose with a mask or handkerchief.
