Imported infectious diseases(輸入感染症について)

What are imported infectious diseases?

If you stop taking them before reaching the end of the course, you won't get better.
(Examples include dysentery, typhoid fever, rabies, dengue fever, malaria, measles, etc.)
 
More and more people are traveling to different countries for tourism and other purposes, which has led to an increase in imported infectious diseases.
 
Please take care to protect yourself from infection and to avoid infecting others.

Prevention of imported infectious diseases

Before you travel, make sure to find out the following information about the country you are going to visit.

  • Information about diseases that are prevalent in the area
  • Information about hospitals. etc.

Be careful about what you eat when you travel

  • Do not drink tap water unless it has been boiled first. Be wary about drinking beverages with ice or watered-down alcoholic beverages.
  • Do not eat raw vegetables, pre-cut fruit, raw fish or shellfish, or raw meat.
  • Do not drink unpasteurized milk.
  • Wash your hands before eating and after using the restroom.

Take care not to get bitten by mosquitoes at your travel destination

  • Wear long-sleeved tops and long pants, and avoid exposing bare skin as much as possible.
  • Use insect repellent correctly.

Do not approach or touch animals at your travel destination

Animals can transmit diseases.

Do not walk barefoot near rivers, lakes or swamps, and do not enter the water

There are sometimes insects near water that can cause infectious diseases.

If you feel unwell

If you feel unwell when you arrive in Japan, be sure to tell the quarantine station upon your arrival.

Also, even if you feel fine when you arrive in Japan, you may start to feel unwell later on.

If this happens, you need to seek medical advice. Make sure to call the medical institution before visiting.

Things to tell the medical institution over the phone

  • Symptoms
  • Where you travelled to and how long you stayed there for
  • What you ate while you were there.
  • Whether you had contact with animals, etc.
