Measles

What is measles?

Measles is an infectious disease that is transmitted by the measles virus.
It is transmitted by inhaling air containing the measles virus, such as when someone coughs or sneezes.
Most people who are not immune to the virus will develop measles if they are infected.

Main symptoms of measles

  • High temperature of 38°C or above
  • Cough, runny nose, bloodshot eyes
  • Reddish rash all over the body

Seek medical advice if you experience any of these symptoms. Be sure to call the medical institution before going.

  • Symptoms
  • If you went abroad, the country you went to and the period of time
  • Whether anyone close to you has had measles
  • Whether you have you been vaccinated (how many times and when)

Rubella

What is rubella?

Rubella is an infectious disease that is transmitted by the rubella virus.
If a pregnant woman contracts rubella, it can be passed on to her baby in the womb.
The baby may develop heart problems or have difficulty hearing.

Main symptoms of rubella

  • Fever
  • Rash all over the body
  • Swollen lymph nodes

Seek medical advice if you have any of these symptoms and are feeling unwell.Be sure to call the medical institution before going.

  • If you went abroad, the country you went to and the period of time
  • Whether anyone close to you has had rubella
  • Whether you have you been vaccinated (how many times and when)
  • Whether you are pregnant or not

To avoid contracting measles or rubella

Make sure to get two doses of the vaccination! (Routine vaccination)

On April 1 2006, a change was made to the Immunization Act making it compulsory to receive two doses of the measles and rubella (MR) vaccination.
(1st dose) From 1 year old until the day before the child's 2nd birthday
(2nd dose) One year before entering elementary school
※This routine vaccination is free of charge.

People who should get vaccinated (voluntary vaccination)

People who are going to travel abroad, people who are going to enter university, people who are often around lots of children, such as at hospitals, nurseries, kindergartens and schools, etc.
※The cost of this voluntary vaccination is borne in full by the individual.

About the rubella vaccination and testing

Residents of Yokohama City who are of junior high school student age or older who have never used this method before, and who fall into one of the following categories, can in principle receive an antibody test free of charge. You can also receive a rubella vaccination at a partial cost of the co-pay amount.

  • Women who wish to become pregnant (cannot be vaccinated during pregnancy)
  • Partners and family members living with a woman who wishes to become pregnant (regardless of marital status)
  • Partners and family members living with a pregnant woman (regardless of marital status)
